Kids Camp 2021!

It was such a joy to welcome the children back to Core El Centro through children’s camp this year. We have had a whirlwind 4 weeks of fun and laughter exploring Creative Movement, Drumming, Kids in the Kitchen, and Gardening!
Fue una gran dicha darles la bienvenida a los niños de regreso a Core El Centro durante el campamento de niños este año. ¡Hemos tenido 4 semanas de un torbellino de diversión y risas explorando con movimiento creativo, tamborileo, niños en la cocina y jardinería!
Creative Movement included yoga, ballet, and jazz this year. It started with Butterfly themed yoga. We got to chill and build our own butterfly wings! The children were able to focus during a meditation, learned to express through art and then learned a series of yoga Asanas that were challenging to the body and mind – all while imagining a light, carefree butterfly that kept them captivated and engaged!
The next 4 days of camp were spent with real Ballerinas from Milwaukee ballet. They showed our students how to dance swan lake and Carmen, play like knights in a sword fight, dance with Mother Ginger in the Nutcracker, and finally choreograph a more modern number using Jazz and a tiny bit of hip hop!
Movimiento Creativo incluyo yoga, ballet y jazz este año. Empezó con el tema de mariposas en yoga. ¡Tuvimos la oportunidad de relajarnos y hacer nuestras propias alas de mariposas! ¡Los niños se enfocaron durante la meditación, aprendieron a expresarse con arte y después a hacer unas series de yoga Asanas las cuales son un reto para el cuerpo y mente – al mismo tiempo imaginándose una mariposa liviana y despreocupada lo cual los mantuvo ocupados y captivados!
Los siguientes 4 días del campamento los pasaron con ballerinas reales de Miwaukee ballet. ¡Ellas les enseñaron a nuestros estudiantes como bailar El lago de Cisnes y Carmen, jugar como caballeros en una lucha de espadas, bailar con mamá Gigogne en el Cascanueces y finalmente hacer un numero de coreografía usando jazz y un poco de hip hop!
We shook the walls at Core El Centro with Afro Latino Drumming. We learned traditional rhythms, learned how to count in Swahili, and got to play on African drums as well as small hand drums. The teachers were experts in their field. The kids were over the moon to learn that Deonte Malique Ellis is a drummer in the Milwaukee Bucks Drum Line and that Sherice Ojumire Charleston is a leader of M.A.D.D Milwaukee African Drum and Dance community.
Drumming is fun but it also helps our bodies produce endorphins! As proof the kids left with big smiles and could stop tapping the rhythms.
Hicimos temblar las paredes de Core El centro con el Tamborileo Afrolatino. Aprendimos ritmos tradicionales, como contar en suajili y tocar tambores africanos al igual que tambores manuales pequeños. Los maestros son expertos en ese tema. Los niños se sorprendieron al saber que Deonte Malique Ellis es tamborilero en la línea de tambores de los Milwaukee Bucks y que Sherice Ojumire Charleston es la líder de M.A.D.D, la comunidad de Milwaukee African Drum and Dance.
Tamborilear es divertido ¡pero también ayuda a nuestro cuerpo a producir endorfinas! Como prueba de eso, los niños salían de la clase con grandes sonrisas y continuaban zapateando al ritmo.
Kids in the Kitchen with Chef Sam Alioto brought out the best little chefs in Milwaukee. Core El Centro kids sure can cook! We made no-bake cookies, salsa, spring rolls, the best popsicles you have ever tasted and the biggest homemade pizzas that you have ever seen. The children learned the recipes and then were left to explore new tastes, smells and food combinations while creating their own versions of each recipe! They shared with our staff and took some home to their parents! I can’t wait until they join us again in Fall for Family cooking!
Los Niños en la Cocina con Chef Sam Alioto sacó los mejores chefitos en Milwaukee. ¡Los niños de Core El Centro indudablemente pueden cocinar! Nosotros cocinamos galletas que no necesitan estar horneadas, salsa, rollitos orientales estilo primavera, las mejores paletas heladas que hayas probado y las más grandes pizzas hechas a mano que hayas visto. ¡Los chicos aprendieron las recetas y los dejamos explorar sabores, olores y combinaciones de comida nuevas mientras creaban su propia versión de cada receta! ¡Ellos las compartieron con nuestros empleados y llevaron algunas a sus padres! ¡No puedo esperar para juntarnos otra vez en el otoño para la Cocina en Familia!
The last camp was all about Gardening. In this camp we planted seeds, tasted honey, learned about bees, explored bugs and different types of gardening, learned about preserving food, and planted our own terrariums! We continuously looked for the rascal garden fairies that live in our Core El Centro gardens, found lots of evidence that they left for us in a scavenger hunt – but never quite got to see one. Maybe at our Harvest Class in September?
El último campamento fue sobre jardinería. En el campamento plantamos semillas, probamos la miel, aprendimos sobre las abejas, exploramos los insectos y tipos diferente de jardinería, ¡aprendimos de preservar la comida y plantamos nuestra propia terraria! Buscamos continuamente las hadas traviesas que viven en nuestros jardines de Core El Centro y encontramos mucha evidencia que nos dejaron por una búsqueda de tesoro, pero nunca tuvimos la oportunidad de ver una. ¿Tal vez en nuestra Clase de Cosecha en Septiembre?
